Biography

Founded in 1856 as the Orchestre du Nouveau Cercle des Étrangers, renamed the Orchestre National de l’Opéra de Monte-Carlo in 1958 and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo (OPMC) in 1980, the Orchestra has established itself as one of the leading musical institutions on the international stage.

Throughout its history, the OPMC has been led by distinguished Musical Directors including Igor Markevitch, Lawrence Foster, Gianluigi Gelmetti, James DePreist, Marek Janowski, Yakov Kreizberg, and Kazuki Yamada. In September 2026, Nathalie Stutzmann assumes the role of Artistic and Musical Director.

Alongside an extensive discography, the OPMC performs at many of the world's leading international festivals. In addition to its symphonic season and collaborations with Monaco's major cultural institutions, the Orchestra embraces a wide range of musical genres, partnering with artists such as Marcus Miller, Stacey Kent, Jamie Cullum, Melody Gardot and IAM.

Presided over by H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover, the OPMC enjoys the support of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the Princely Government, the Société des Bains de Mer and the Association of Friends of the Orchestra.
